Perth transport crisis calls for Federal assistance (corrected)

Perth transport crisis calls for Federal assistance

Media Release – Tuesday November 30, 2010-11-30

West Australian Senator Scott Ludlam has called on state and federal
authorities to work together on introducing a city-wide light rail
system to alleviate the pressure on Perth’s roads.

The Greens Senator said yesterday morning’s traffic chaos, caused by a
single accident involving truck carrying a forklift, exposed the
inadequacy of transport infrastructure in Perth.

"For an incident at 5.15am to cause widespread congestion until 10am,
spreading out to Woodvale, Woodlands, Tuart Hill and Bayswater, is
extraordinary but not entirely unexpected," he said. "To put it simply,
we have more cars on the road than we need. The solution is a
comprehensive public-transport reform program including light rail."

Light rail is the modern version of the trams that served Perth until
1958.

"The fact that the WA transport minister Simon O’Brien did not comment
yesterday on the issue of investment in public transport in Western
Australia says more than any statement from him would have," said
Senator Ludlam. "If the West Australian government is serious about
alleviating traffic on our roads, they will expand our public transport
system."

Senator Ludlam, the Greens public transport spokesperson, spearheaded
the party’s light rail policy at the Federal Election.

"We have a comprehensive light rail plan prepare for Perth and for
regional centres throughout Western Australia," he said. "A single
electric railcar can accommodate 60 people including space for bikes and
wheelchairs. You can imagine the pressure a comprehensive light rail
system would take off the roads. The Federal and State government needs
to work together to make it happen."

Encouraging news – Patrick McGorry reverses support for ‘pre-psychosis drugging’ and should now abandon his support for the inclusion of ‘Psychosis Risk Syndrome’ in DSMV

This weeks blog ( http://speedupsitstill.com/ ) welcomes Patrick McGorry’s change of heart in abadoning his advocacy of pre-psychosis drugging and calls on the Australian of the Year to oppose the inclusion of Psychosis Risk Syndrome in the handbook of psychiatry the DSM.

For over a decade Patrick McGorry had advocated the prescription of antipsychotics to adolescents on the hunch that they may later become psychotic. However, in response to last week’s blog ( http://speedupsitstill.com/patrick-mcgorry%e2%80%99s-call-early-intervention-psychosis-stitch-time-stitch-up ) a spokesperson for Professor McGorry told the West Australian Professor McGorry no longer supports pre-psychosis drugging.

To the best of my knowledge this is the first time Professor McGorry has publicly declared that he has abandoned his support for the use of antipsychotics to prevent psychosis. His change of position is welcome. However, history tells it will not be enough to prevent a tide of pre-emptive drugging if Psychosis Risk Syndrome is included in DSMV, the next edition of the American Psychiatric Associations handbook of psychiatry.

If this happens over-confident clinicians influenced by drug company hype (and possibly inducements) will prescribe adolescents antipsychotics as ‘bit of extra insurance’ just in case they later become psychotic. It won’t be the majority of potential prescribers who create a problem, but as we learned from the manufactured ADHD epidemic a handful of rogue prescribers can do enormous damage whilst the majority of their colleagues silently look on.

Officially recognising Psychosis Risk Syndrome in the DSMV would give a false legitimacy to the use of anti-psychotics for the treatment of the “disorder”. It would also give legitimacy to the “disorder” itself. Given that the vast majority (60%-90%) of those diagnosed with Psychosis Risk Disorder would be misdiagnosed ‘false positives’ it is legitimacy it does not deserve.

It is encouraging that Professor McGorry now acknowledges that it is reasonable to hold contrary views on the merit of including ‘Psychosis Risk Syndrome’ in DSMV. This is a significant change from his recent rhetoric of 21st Century proven solutions. Hopefully it indicates an increasing willingness to base clinical practice on evidence rather than hypothesis.

I suspect that this softening of Professor Mcgorry’s position is in large part due to the 180 degree reversal of support for Psychosis Risk Syndrome by his long term research partner at Orygen Youth Health psychiatrist Dr Alison Yung. In 2009 Dr Yung said; ‘So why the need for a specific risk syndrome diagnosis? Is the agenda really to use antipsychotics?

Dr Yung’s change is significant, but as Australian of the Year and a former president and current treasurer of the International Early Psychosis Association, it is Professor McGorry who has both the ear of government and the international psychiatric profession.

Changing his view on the validity of Psychosis Risk Syndrome being included in DSMV would not be an admission of failure but an act of a truly deserving Australian of the Year. More importantly according to Dr Allen Frances, the American Psychiatrist who led the 1994 revision of the current edition of the DSM (DSM-IV), it would help avoid ‘an iatrogenic [adverse
effects resulting from treatment] public health disaster’

Patrick McGorry stops advocating ‘pre-psychosis drugging’ and should now abandon his support for the inclusion of ‘Psychosis Risk Syndrome’ in DSMV

For over a decade Patrick McGorry had advocated the prescription of antipsychotics to adolescents on the hunch that they may later become psychotic. However, in response to last week’s blog a spokesperson for Professor McGorry told the West Australian he does “not recommend this (pre-psychosis drugging) as a standard treatment for clinical care because there are other treatments that are safer, like cognitive behavioural therapy and fish oil….there has been a substantial amount of research and we do change according to the research.”[1]

To the best of my knowledge this is the first time Professor McGorry has publicly declared that he has abandoned his support for the use of antipsychotics to prevent psychosis. His change of position is welcome. However, history tells it will not be enough to prevent a tide of pre-emptive drugging if Psychosis Risk Syndrome is included in DSMV, the next edition of the American Psychiatric Associations handbook of psychiatry.[2]

Unfortunately it is common practice for psychiatric drugs to be used ‘off label’ for non-approved purposes, without supporting research on the ‘hunch’ of the prescribing clinician. For example across the globe hundreds of thousands of pre-schoolers have been prescribed Ritalin for ADHD despite the fact that the manufacturers warning ‘there is not enough information to recommend its use in children under 6 years old.’[3]

This is exactly what will happen with anti-psychotics if Psychosis Risk Syndrome is included in DSMV. Over-confident clinicians influenced by drug company hype (and possibly inducements) will prescribe adolescents antipsychotics as ‘bit of extra insurance’ just in case they later become psychotic.

Given that the vast majority (60%-90%) of those diagnosed with Psychosis Risk Disorder would be misdiagnosed ‘false positives’ it is legitimacy it does not deserve.[4]

But most importantly it is completely unnecessary to include Psychosis Risk Syndrome in the DSMV. Professor McGorry and fellow psychiatrists do not need a new “disorder” to allow his now preferred treatments, cognitive behaviour therapy and fish oil, to be used for troubled adolescents.

On the positive side, in addition to reversing his support for the use of anti-psyhotics before any psychotic episode, Professor McGorry’s policy advisor, Matthew Hamilton, has also acknowledged that Professor McGorry is now open to considering these non-pharmaceutical treatments as the first line of treatment for adolescents who have experienced a first psychotic episode.

This is more good news. It may encourage clinicians to identify and deal with the causes of first psychosis free from the ‘mist of medication’ and will not prevent the later use of antipsychotics if less chemically invasive treatments are ineffective.

It is also encouraging that Professor McGorry now acknowledges that it is reasonable to hold contrary views on the merit of including ‘Psychosis Risk Syndrome’ in DSMV.

Is the agenda really to use antipsychotics?…I think there are concerns about validity, especially predictive validity, and this relates to potentially stigmatizing and unjustified treatment for some individuals as well as all the negative social effects of diagnosis. I think including the risk syndrome in the DSM-V is premature.’[5]

Thai & Burmese owners should pay for their negligence – Greens back Montara reccomendation for polluter pays system

26 November 2010

Greens back Montara recommendation for polluter pays system

Senator Rachel Siewert, Greens spokesperson on Marine Issues has backed a key recommendation of the Montara Commission of Inquiry report, the development of a ‘polluter pays’ system for environmental accidents and says the party have given in-principle support to the prospect of a single regulator.

Senator Siewert says Australia currently relies on the good will of companies to meet cleanup and recovery costs, without legal obligation in place.

“Companies are only legally required to have insurance to cover the costs of complying with directions relating to the clean-up or other remediation of the effects of the escape of petroleum,” Senator Siewert said today.

“The current law places no specific liability on the owners of oil wells to pay for the clean up or environmental damage caused by spills. The Greens have advocated for a robust statutory liability regime for offshore petroleum activities.

“During the election, we proposed a legislative scheme that includes strict liability for the full costs of removing the oil and clean up, environmental repair and on-going environmental monitoring. This could be one way of implementing the polluter pay principle.

“Such a scheme will ensure that the companies, who seek to profit from offshore petroleum activities, rather than the community, are required to pay the costs of oil spills.

“The scheme would also cover damage to our shared natural resources, including assessment of such damage and economic losses, including destruction of property and loss of income.

“An uncapped statutory liability regime will also act as an incentive to meet strict operating standards to minimise the risk of oil spilling in to our oceans. This is one possible way of implementing the polluter pay principle, but we are open to consider alternatives if they are considered more effective,” said Senator Siewert.

Senator Siewert says The Greens have given in-principle support to the Inquiry’s recommendation to establish a single regulator for the offshore oil and gas sector.

“However we have concerns with such a regulator taking over responsibility under the Environmental and Biodiversity Conservation Act, and will be carefully reviewing the Government’s legislation once it is introduced,” Senator Siewert said.

“Cultural change that delivers a more rigorous approach to safety and environmental issues is clearly necessary – we will be looking for this in the new regulator” said Senator Siewert.

“But this will not happen without appropriate Government investment. The Greens will be working to ensure that the financial support, legislative support and staffing support needed for the single regulator are delivered.

“Without appropriately experienced staff and without the financial resources, we won’t see the regulatory improvements which are so obviously needed.

“I encourage all states and territories to cooperate fully in the process of establishing a single regulator and lend their existing skills and knowledge to the process,” Senator Siewert concluded.

Sir Gairdner Hospital viewed from the DNA towe...
Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

Hi everyone

I have a little story of a personal nature that I have decided to share with all of you.

A few of you know, that a few weeks ago, I lost someone very close to me to that evil disease, cancer ( i refuse to give it a capital letter, it doesn’t deserve one). His name was John Radford and he was my cousin. In fact, he was more to me than a cousin. He was my rock, my brother and above all else, my friend. Now, John was a very passionate man, a man of morals, a man who put his money where his mouth was. A staunch advocate of animal rights, and a guy who was always there to help anybody. Anytime.

About a week before he died, and obviously very ill, he was concerned that all his special foods and medicines were taking up room in the nurses fridge. We were having a chat about what he could do and he wanted to buy a fridge for the week he was there and that when he left (at this point he thought he was going to palliative care), he could sell it. John had a habit of complicating things, and I have one of simplifying everything (which would sometimes get each other frustrated- he thought i didn’t care and i thought he stressed too much!) so I suggest he rent one, that way he wouldn’t have to worry about selling it when he left the hospital, the company could drop it off and pick it up,and he could concentrate on himself.

When i was in the hospital next, he excitedly showed me his little fridge he bought (yes he bought it!) ‘ Only $260, and i’m going to leave it here so it can help hundreds of people after i have left’. In fact I’ve bought 3 and donated them all to the hospital. I can afford it.’  This, all coming from a guy who was on a disabilty pension, with little savings, in a lot of pain, and still thinking about everyone else.

The next day, he rang me, and during the conversation, he brought up the fridges again… and said these words that will never leave me   ‘ OH JENI, IT FEELS SO GOOD TO GIVE’.  How true.  He also mentioned that the government should be buying these things for the hospital, but they are not putting the funding in…so he would do it.

A nurse, just into her training, in a mostly thankless job had considered leaving and doing something else, until he donated these fridges. He changed her mind with this random act of kindness.

Another thing Johnno (as we called him) constantly raved about right to the end was the kindness of the nurses and the brilliant job that they do. We would discuss how they are overworked, underpaid but still did what they do, and how awareness should be raised to change our medical system,

Johnno died on October 17th 2010 .

Which comes to the reason why I decided to share this with all of you.

In tribute to my cousin John , and to all the nurses and doctors who work tirelessly,  and for little thanks, and to all the people in hospital, for those who’ve had cancer and beaten it, or those going through hell right now, and those we have lost,  The Shinkickers and special guests are holding a fundraiser at The Carlisle Hotel, 174 Rutland Ave, Carlisle on 12th December from 4:00pm- 8:00pm to raise money for Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital for them to buy equipment. whether it be fridges, or even just tea and coffee for the doctors and nurses. Whatever. I’m going to call the hospital and see what they need, and we’ll deliver. I promise every single dollar raised is going to the hospital. So please, remember those words, my dear dear Johnno said to me ‘IT FEELS SO GOOD TO GIVE’, coz it does, and lets do our bit to help those who need it.

Thanks for letting me share this with you…

and as my cuz’s fav song went

Joy to the world

To all the boys and girls

Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea

Joy to you and me

Also on another note, on Sat 27th Nov at The Woodbridge Hotel , Guildford 9pm- midnight  and on Sun 28th November at The Carlisle Hotel, Carlisle from 4:30pm – 7:30pm The shinkickers have a special guest flying in from over east. His name is Brian Cain, he’s a Tamworth Golden Harmonica medal winner for 2010 and a fine cross blues harp player and vocalist. He has also just published a book called novel ‘Circles of Fear’ published in Fremantle by Vivid publishing which is selling like hot cakes…  so please come down, and make him welcome.

West Australia – Resource Fiasco – Ferguson’s Kimberley gas hub stitch-up

22 November 2010

Ferguson’s Kimberley gas hub stitch-up

The federal Minister for Resources, Martin Ferguson effectively directed Woodside to build its giant gas processing factory at James Price Point in the Kimberley as a retention lease condition, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown told the Senate this afternoon.

“The onshore Woodside gas hub is becoming matter of growing national outrage,” said Senator Brown.

Senator Brown brandished Woodside’s lease conditions, signed off by Minister Ferguson and the Western Australian Government, the first condition being that:

This shall be the concept whereby gas is processed at the Kimberley LNG precinct unless the lessee can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Joint Authority that an alternative development concept is likely to be commercially viable at an earlier time.

As other options such as Karratha and Port Hedland are further away this option effectively became a requirement.

“The Ferguson condition sewed up the site before studies began,” said Senator Brown.

Woodside’s partners, including BHP Billiton, have made it clear they do not want the gas processing factory at James Price Point if their “values and standards are compromised in any way.”

From the Greens – Media Release: Greens secure safeguards for public NBN

Greens negotiate safeguards for public NBN

Media release, Monday 22 November 2010

The Australian Greens have secured safeguards making any future privatisation of the National Broadband Network subject to a full public inquiry and vote in parliament.

“The point of this exercise is to make it as difficult as possible for a future Government to put us through a repeat of the Telstra privatisation debacle,” Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam said.

“If we’re going to the expense of $11 billion to bring Telstra’s networks back into public hands, we’d rather not repeat the whole privatisation mess in 13 years time.”

“Under the originally proposed legislation the sale would have been triggered automatically five years after the completion of the Network,” he said. “With the amendments we have negotiated, any proposed sale will be subject to a study to determine if it is in the public interest and votes in both houses of parliament.”

“The study will involve a joint Parliamentary inquiry and the productivity commission working through detailed terms of reference.”

“The debate on the separation of Telstra which finally gets under way today, is the first important step in fixing the debacle of the Telstra privatisation.

Great New Features for wordpress blogs -: Linking, Sorting, Paging

New Features: Linking, Sorting, Paging

Jane Wells | November 19, 2010 at 3:30 am | Tags: ajax, color scheme, column sorting, Dashboard, IE9, links, pagination, WordPress 3.1 | Categories: Features | URL: http://wp.me/pf2B5-1sW

Oh my!

It’s that time of year again, when the folks over at WordPress.org start putting the finishing touches on the next version of WordPress (in this case, version 3.1), and the lucky users of WordPress.com are automatically included in the beta testing, giving you all access to new features about a month before they are officially released. This is awesome, because you get early access, and your feedback can help us make even more improvements. I’m personally pretty excited about the new features you’ll be seeing around here starting later tonight, as they are additions I’ve been wanting for a long time. Here are the new things you can expect to see the next time you’re in your dashboard:

Easier Internal Linking

Yay. Finally. Literally. Seriously. What?! I know, right? :)

You’re writing a post (or a page) in WordPress. You mention something you’ve written about before, and think to yourself, “I’m going to link to that last post!” What do you do? You might open a new tab and search for the older content in your dashboard’s list of posts, or you might go to your live blog and find it. Either way, you have to find that content and get the URL, so that when you click on the link button in the post editor, you’ll have it ready. Right? What’s that, 5-8 steps, depending on which way you do it? No more!

Internal linking previewExisting posts and pages can be found and linked to using dynamic search.

With our sexy new internal linking feature, you can now enter any URL to create a link just like you used to, OR you can search your existing posts and pages right there in the link popup. A combination of pre-loading, autocomplete, and some ajaxy goodness make the new link creation tool a joy to use (and man, that popup is so much faster!). We hope this addition spurs you to make more connections between pieces of content on your site, which will make it easier for your visitors to find more related content from you. One more time, all together now: Yay! (Right?)

Column Sorting

Column sorting previewWhen you’re in your dashboard and you click to the Posts section (or Pages, Media, any screen with one of those listing tables), do you ever wish you could click a column header to change the display, like to sort things by date, alphabetically, by author, or other criteria? I know I wish for it all the time. And now we have it! This feature is a product of a successful Google Summer of Code student project, proof that the program is a great way to get involved with WordPress development. The little arrow next to the column heading (in my example screenshot, the Date column) shows you which column is determining the sort order, and if it’s ascending or descending. Just click on the column header to sort by that column, or to reverse the order.

Better Pagination

Preview of new pagination styleIf you have a lot of content, you may have run into a mildly annoying experience at some point when paging through screens in the dashboard that list your posts, media files, etc. Clicking forward and back is easy enough, as is skipping to the first or last couple of screens, but what about the middle? Say you had 23 screens worth of post listings, you’re on screen #6, and based on the dates, you think the one you’re looking for might be around page 15 or so. You would have had to click several times to advance a few screens at a time until you reached the screen you wanted. No more! With our new pagination style, those quick forward/back and first/last links are still there, but now you can jump right to any screen by just changing the editable number shown in the pagination area (and hitting enter). Sweet!

Ajax Search Results
Reviewing search results will be faster and no longer require screen refreshes in the dashboard, thanks to the addition of ajax to the search results screen. Go Speed Racer!

Revised Blue Color Scheme
In the personal options in your profile, you have a choice between gray and blue dashboard color schemes (the default is gray). We updated the gray color scheme a while back, but didn’t update the blue one at the same time. (Remember when we moved from the dark header to the lighter header? Good times.) The new blue color scheme is lighter, cleaner, and based on the same shadings as the gray color scheme but with a blue hue so that your focus can remain firmly on your content creation, without distraction. If you’ve never tried the blue color scheme, now would be a great time to give it a whirl and see how you like it! Are there other colors you’d like to have as options? Let us know in the comments!

Improved IE9 Support
If you’ve had any trouble using drag and drop features in the dashboard or have had any problems with the Visual editor on the post creation screen when using Internet Explorer 9, sorry! Improvements have been made to make these features work smoothly in the latest Microsoft browser.

Good stuff, yeah? Things to bear in mind: these are new features, and though they’ve been worked on and tested for some time, you may find a bug we missed. If one of these features gives you any trouble, please let us know. You can leave a comment on this post within the next two weeks, talk about it in the forums, or contact support through the usual channels.

I hope you enjoy these additions as much as we enjoyed making them for you. Happy blogging!

Australia – Press Freedom – Shield Laws – Media _ Whistleblower – West Australia only state that won’t protect press freedom

WA only state that won’t protect press freedom

Media release, Thursday 18 November 2010

Greens Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam has called on WA Attorney General Christian Porter to support shield laws to protect journalists and whistle-blowers.

“Effective shield laws for journalists and public service whistle-blowers act as an encouragement to vigilance and integrity,” said Senator Ludlam. “If journalists can not protect their sources, we will not have people coming forward to expose wrong-doing and abuses of power.”

The Senate held a brief inquiry this afternoon to examine the shield laws bill which has in-principle support from all sides of politics, including the Liberal Shadow Attorney General.

“Mr Porter is the only attorney general in Australia to declare his opposition to this much-needed reform.”

“Legislation in most democratic countries provides for a rebuttable presumption of journalists’ privilege. The United Kingdom, New Zealand and most US states provide legal protection for journalists’ sources,” Senator Ludlam said. “There is no argument against shield laws. I will be writing to the West Australian Attorney General to urge him to support this legislation.”

Senator Ludlam said the case of West Australian journalist Sean Cowan being threatened with a contempt charge over interview recordings, as well as the 2008 police raid on the Sunday Times after a report on State Government advertising by reporter Paul Lampathakis, illustrated the need for shield laws in Western Australia.

“We do not want to see whistleblowers intimidated into keeping silent, and we do not want to see police raids when a Government is embarrassed by a news story,” he said. “Shield laws would enable journalists to protect anonymous sources who have brought to light matters in the public interest.”

Senator Ludlam said the legislation will not protect spurious reports.

“It will protect journalists acting in the public interest. This law will contribute to an atmosphere conducive to accountability and integrity in our public and private institutions,” he said.

Media Release: NBN business plan must be tabled now

NBN business plan must be tabled now

Media release, Wednesday 17 November 2010

The Australian Senate has resolved that the Government should immediately provide the National Broadband Network business plan to the parliament and the public.

Greens communications spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlam successfully moved a motion demanding that communications minister Senator Stephen Conroy table the business plan and the Government’s response to the McKinsey and Company and KPMG Implementation Study, effective immediately.

“We keep hearing the business plan is overflowing with good news, but the Parliament hasn’t seen it.

The Prime Minister now says it will be released in December, long after Parliament has risen. I strongly suggest the Prime Minister reconsider this decision, so that Parliament can do its job – particularly with so many telco-related issues in play during this sitting fortnight.

The Greens’ motion was passed with the support of the Opposition and independent Senator Nick Xenophon.

GetUp donations. Have your say: Your vote: funding our movement – Activism Australia

This isn’t about an urgent action to take. But we have some important decisions to make, and we need to make them together – so this is an invitation to vote and have your say.

Conservative Senator Eric Abetz has launched a media attack on our community, saying that GetUp has no real members – and trying to brand us hypocrites for advocating new laws to regulate political donations. Because his accusations are getting some play in the media, we thought it appropriate to respond, and get your thoughts.

GetUp has a pretty unique way of campaigning; we don’t collect money for a good cause, and then find something worthwhile to do with it. We find super-effective ways to make a difference, and then pool resources to get it done. So far, over 50,000 Australians, enough to fill a football stadium, have chipped in – and every single donation has helped powerful campaigns on issues ranging from asylum seekers to David Hicks, climate change and mental health funding.

It’s something to be very proud of. That’s why we launched a new page on the GetUp website showing a live summary of GetUp’s donations, the names of major donors, and the amounts they gave. We’re not aware of any political party or any other organisation that disclose their donations like this.

The average donation is just $45, but a few are much larger, including a recent contribution of $1.12m worth of additional TV spots for an ad GetUp members put on air. You might remember the ad: it featured GetUp members speaking quotes from Tony Abbott about his views on women’s role in society. It was suggested by GetUp members, starred GetUp members, and a record 8,574 GetUp members donated to put it on air.

After seeing it on TV, the CFMEU, a union representing 120,000 workers, offered to donate $1.12m worth of airtime to keep the ad on air. We said yes – and disclosed the amount publicly to the media.

Now, Senator Abetz is using this to attack GetUp. He has accused us of hypocrisy, because GetUp members have argued for a new set of electoral laws in Australia, including transparency and limits for political donations – laws that would have to include groups like GetUp if they were implemented effectively. Senator Abetz is against such reform, and as a Howard Government Minister, introduced electoral laws that made political donations more secret. They are the very same laws that excluded voters from the rolls until GetUp’s High Court challenge ruled it unconstitutional to do so.

Some people think that we should flat-out refuse all larger donations now. Others argue that we should play by the same rules as everyone else – and shouldn’t hobble our campaigns on climate change and social justice by turning away donations for campaigns we’re already running. Not while politicians, banks, uranium, tobacco, and gambling interests are allowed to continue spending huge money unchallenged.

Our policy was to accept support from the CFMEU for the ad campaign GetUp members put on air. But ultimately, that policy should be set by our whole membership.

So, what do you think? Should we accept large donations to existing campaigns? It’s an important decision with major implications the future of our movement – so whichever way you lean, please let us know in this quick survey:

http://www.getup.org.au/campaign/your_say

Please make sure your thoughts count in the survey – but if you’d like to add a longer note, you can also email discuss. Our new webpage with donations information can be seen here: www.getup.org.au/about/disclosure

Just last month the GetUp movement reached 400,000 members. What makes us unique is not just our size, but the fact that our power is drawn from your action – and your decisions. That’s why your opinion is so important.

Looking forward to your thoughts,
The GetUp team

Australia : Mining tax committee stacked with uranium interests – WA Senator

Mining tax review stacked with uranium industry representatives

MEDIA RELEASE Wednesday November 10, 2010.

The Australian Greens have criticised the Federal Government for stacking its mining tax Policy Transition Group with uranium industry representatives.

The Greens spokesperson for mining, Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam, said four of the nine members of the group are committed supporters of uranium mining.

“Minister for Resources and Energy Martin Ferguson, chair of the PTG, is an enthusiastic advocate of uranium mining. Co-chair Don Argus is the former chair of the company developing the world’s largest known uranium deposit, David Klingner is the chair of Energy Resources of Australia Ltd – which operates the notorious Ranger uranium mine and Erica Smyth is a director of Toro and on the board of ANSTO,” said Senator Ludlam. “Is it any wonder the uranium sector is exempt from the proposed mining tax?”

Senator Ludlam said there is no chance of a fair and balanced result emerging from the group.

“The Mineral Resources Rent Tax should be an important part of public revenue at a time when this country is still negotiating the aftershocks of the global economic crisis,” said Senator Ludlam. “We’ve had the Treasurer, Mr Swan, say there will be a ten billion dollar shortfall in the 2010-2011 budget due to the strong Australian dollar, but the government will not consider including uranium mining in the MRRT.”

Senator Ludlam called on the Government to review the composition of the Policy Transition Group to ensure all options for the Mineral Resources Rent Tax are considered in an equitable way.

New Book, Website and Blog – Speed Up and Sit Still - exposes the ADHD Industry (www.speedupsitstill.com)

Member of the Western Australian State Parliament Martin Whitely MLA, a former teacher, outlines the controversies surrounding ADHD diagnosis and treatment in Australia, in his book Speed Up and Sit Still published by University of Western Australia Publishing.

While other books have been written about ADHD this is the first to outline the science, marketing and politics of ADHD, written by a politician. Whitely became concerned about ADHD in the1990’s when he was alarmed at the number of boys in his class who were medicated with amphetamines and were unnaturally quiet and compliant.

In Speed Up and Sit Still Whitely examines the reasons for the massive increase in Australian ADHD drug use concluding, “Prescribing rates have exploded because it is in the interests of many stakeholders to accept, without proof, the hypothesis that ADHD is caused by a biochemical imbalance.

Drug companies profit, busy clinicians get a quick, easy, lucrative diagnosis and treatment, struggling teachers get a compliant child, governments get a cheap way of appearing to meet child mental health demands and parents are fooled into an illusory belief that they have helped their child with a quick and apparently effective intervention. The real losers in the ADHD debate are children who are completely powerless to prevent themselves being ‘medicated’.”

Whitely is scathing in his assessment of his fellow politicians claiming most leave the controversial issue in the “too hard basket” or do as the Rudd and Howard Governments did, “delegate the solution to the problem of reckless prescribing to those who had created it in the first place.“

Speed Up and Sit Still follows the money trail and outlines the influence of the American Psychiatric Association and the pharmaceutical companies on Australian psychiatric practice. It also details the history of ADHD in Western Australia and New South Wales.

ADHD MEDICIN: RITALIN

Perth is the world’s only ADHD child drugging hotspot to have experienced a massive (60%+) decline in child prescribing rates – simultaneous halving in the rates of amphetamine abuse amongst teenagers. Mr Whitely contends Perth’s experience is “unequivocal evidence supporting the commonsense proposition that prescribing amphetamines facilitates their abuse.”

Whitely attributes Perth’s massive decline in ADHD prescribing rates to tighter prescribing accountability measures and a robust local media debate about the validity of the diagnosis and the safety and efficacy of the drugs. He claims “Sydney, Brisbane and Hobart are vying for the title of Australia’s new child drugging capital because they haven’t learned from Perth’s mistakes; they are repeating them.”

Speed Up and Sit Still, covers complex material in an easy-to-read format aimed at parents, teachers, medical professionals, policy setters and the community at large.
