MEDIA RELEASE

Greens: Uranium conference should focus on waste management, as there’s no future for the industry

20 July 2011

Greens MLC Robin Chapple will address the Australian Uranium Conference on Thursday 21 August, at Fremantle.

A long-time opponent of the nuclear industry, Mr Chapple will present his views to the conference, and has also invited Koara Traditional Owner Richard Evans to join him on stage.

Mr Evans is a traditional owner from the lands of the proposed BHP Yeelirrie Uranium mine. He is a spokesperson for the WA Nuclear Free Alliance.

Mr Chapple will highlight analysis of the uranium industry showing that uranium is a highly risky investment, with the nuclear power industry going backwards in previous years, and now stopped in its tracks by the disastrous experience at Fukushima.

“In 2008 no new nuclear energy facility was started up, seven new plants were added in 2009 – 2010, and 11 were shut down over that period. The shutdown trend will continue as engineering evaluations demand that the plants from the 60s and 70s are closed, said Mr Chapple.

“The alternative, renewable energy, is booming across the world, and has a bright future as a sustainable energy source.

“Uranium mining is inherently dangerous to its workforce. It leaves toxic radioactive waste behind. At best the ore is utilized in nuclear energy production, with catastrophic consequences such as those at Fukushima. At worst the ore makes its way into nuclear weapons – wielded by hostile states or terrorists.

“The nuclear industry has no rational future, other than the eternal waste management task ahead.” concluded Mr Chapple.

Mr Chapple will be available for media comment outside the Fremantle Esplanade Hotel from 8:15am Thursday 21 July, where he will then address the protest gathering outside the conference. He will address conference delegates in the afternoon session.

LadyComp Increases Awareness Of Oral Contraception Cancer risks

LadyComp Increases Awareness Of Oral Contraception Cancer Risks

Media Release
For Release: Immediate

LadyComp Increases Awareness Of Oral Contraception Cancer Risks

LadyComp, the developers of the world’s most advanced natural fertility device, are concerned that women may have become blasé about the possible risks of oral contraceptives due to their longevity in the health system. LadyComp wants to increase awareness of these risks and promote natural contraception as a means for optimal health.
Oral contraceptives have been at the centre of concerns about the risks of related cancer development and, as such, have been under the microscope for the past 18 years. Over this time, considerable research and studies have been undertaken but results have remained inconclusive.

"This means that oral contraceptives cannot be deemed conclusively safe, especially in the long-term," said Tracey Vale, spokesperson for LadyComp. "Questions concerning cancer-risk continue to be raised and investigated."

"We are concerned that women do not know the potential risks of the pill, simply because it has been around for so long and is deemed safe and acceptable in the mainstream.”

"Women should be made more aware of these risks and choose natural birth control for their long-term health and wellbeing,” Vale said.

The National Cancer Institute (U.S.) says "Because medical research suggests that cancers of the female reproductive organs sometimes depend on naturally occurring sex hormones for their development and growth, scientists have been investigating a possible link between OC use and cancer risk." The pill suppresses oestrogen and progesterone production, while the lesser effective mini pill suppresses progesterone.

"A correlation between oestrogen and increased risk of breast cancer has sparked continuing controversy about a possible link between OCs and cancer.”

The Institute says "This scrutiny has produced a wealth of data on OC use and the development of certain cancers, although results have not always been consistent."

The National Cancer Institute’s Fact Sheet cites the following concerns based on past, current and ongoing studies and research:

  • Oral Contraceptives increase the risk of certain cancers.

  • For recent users of oral contraceptives under the age of 35, there is a risk of breast cancer.
  • There is evidence that long-term OC use increases the risk of cervical cancer.
  • There is some evidence that certain liver tumours may be related to OC use.

LadyComp was developed to offer women a healthy, natural alternative to oral contraceptives and other forms of contraception. OCs are considered to be a burden on the body due to their chemical nature and the fact that they alter the natural status quo of the hormonal system.

“There is no logical reason for a woman to burden her health, or her sex life, with contraceptive measures for a full 28 days, when in fact it is only possible for her to become pregnant on six of these days,” said Vale.

Health – Australia Fwd:Group buying sites spark boom in unneeded treatments #auspol

Group buying sites spark boom in unneeded treatments

Consumer health website, www.itsmyhealth.com.au reports that the new craze for coupons from group buying websites is fuelling a boom in unnecessary medical procedures and encouraging beauty treatment companies to flout advertising regulations.

Coupon websites such as Scoopon and Jump On It have soared in popularity in recent months. They allow companies to offer discounts on products ranging from food to photography to holidays – provided a certain number of people sign up.

Anti-wrinkle injections, laser treatments and micordermabrasion are among the cosmetic procedures being offered online, and The Cosmetic Physicians Society of Australia recently hit out at these websites, claiming that they raise legal and ethical problems by promoting discounted cosmetic procedures.

Moreover, many coupons require users to pay for their procedure in advance of a face-to-face consultation, giving little opportunity to determine whether or not it is appropriate for the individual.

Fwd from Seashepherd: SOS – Save Our Ship – The Steve Irwin needs your help!

Emergency SOS! Save Our Sea Shepherd Ship!

Dear Tony,

I need your help to free our flagship the Steve Irwin.

Our vessel has been detained by the United Kingdom courts because of a civil lawsuit brought against Sea Shepherd by a Maltese company: Fish and Fish Limited (F & F).

Back in June 2010, the Steve Irwin rescued endangered bluefin tuna from F & F nets. They are claiming damages. We believe these fish were caught illegally – after the season closed, without an inspector on board, and without any legal paperwork for their catch. This lawsuit gives us the opportunity to expose what we allege are illegal activities by F & F and we will aggressively defend the case on this basis.

But, unless we immediately post a bond for USD$1,411,692.87, the Steve Irwin will be held or possibly sold.

As you may know, the Steve Irwin must sail immediately to protect endangered pilot whales in the Faeroe Islands. Then we sail onto the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary to stop the murderous Japanese whaling fleet.

I urge you to help Save Our Shiptoday! We need to raise USD$1,411,692.87 by next week! Gifts are coming in, but there’s a long way to go. Your gift is essential to save endangered whales.

You’ve already helped save thousands of whales and untold numbers of other marine creatures. But unless we get our ship back, a lot of whales will die tragic and needless deaths.

Please help free the Steve Irwin so we can return to sea, doing what we do best – defending life in our oceans.

I urge you to send the largest gift you can today – your gift is incredibly important and will make a difference.

Never has the need for your help and support been greater.

Thank-you!

For Our Oceans and for the Steve Irwin,

Captain Paul Watson
Founder and President

Rape is rape – help the FBI understand #VAW #Women

Change.org
Tell the FBI: Include all rapes in national statistics

Sign the Petition

Dear tony,

In a recent speech at the University of New Hampshire, Vice President Joe Biden recounted the story of a college freshman he called Jenny.

Jenny was raped after a party on campus. She tried to pursue a case against her rapist only to be asked if she had been drinking, what she was wearing, and whether she was dancing. The university never took action against her assailant.

As Biden said, "Rape is rape is rape."

Yet each year the FBI omits hundreds of thousands of rapes from its Uniform Crime Report (UCR) because it’s using an 80-year-old definition of rape.

The FBI’s outdated definition of rape is limited to "the carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will."

Sign the petition to tell the FBI to update their definition to include all forms of rape.

The FBI’s flawed definition of rape excludes any form of sexual assault that falls outside of the narrowest understanding of heterosexual sex, including the rape of men and boys as well as transgender people.

The emphasis on "forcible" rape also means that the rape or assault of women with physical or mental disabilities and those who were unconscious or under the influence of drugs and alcohol – like Jenny — are often excluded.

The FBI’s 2007 Uniform Crime Report listed 91,874 "forcible rapes," but some estimates suggest the actual number may be 24 times higher.

The FBI’s underreporting of rapes translates to less federal funding for police departments nationwide to test rape kits — and fewer investigators bringing rapists to justice.

Sign here to tell the FBI to update its definition of rape to address and end sexual assault:
