International — Twenty-four years after the attack by the French secret services against our ship the Rainbow Warrior – which cost the life of a Greenpeace photographer – the nuclear industry is once again at the heart a major spy scandal involving Greenpeace.

Google shows alternative energy firms the way- Solar Thermal needed in Western Australia!

This is a great tool.

It levels the playing field a bit between conservationists and the explorers who had this mapping capability for a long time.

The key has got to be the values put in for exclusion.

What do you think?

Any big Solar like Ausra or Solel have a few minutes to look for sites in Western Australia – we need some renewable base load Power  facilities or the Premier is going to build Nuclear Plants!

Apple release the new Mac Mini – more new kit as well in Apple Store Oz

Apple Mac Mini 2009

Apple Mac Mini 2009

Thanks to iPhoneiNquisitor for the news that the new Mac Mini is now on sale – click the picture above for the Apple link and confirmation of the details, inclusing iLife ’09 being part of the deal.

There are more goodies too, but the Mini is an amazing little fella. Tell your business friends they can upgrade their PCs to Minis much more cheaply than a PC box.

Apple iLife 09 is due out today – face recognition for iPhoto, guitar & piano lessons in Garage Band – bring it on!

iLife '09

iLife '09

Apple’s iLife ’09 is due out today. Some new features will make it even more useful than ever.

See here for Apple’s info on;

  • face recognition and geolocation for pics in iPhoto
  • guitar and piano lessons built into Garage Band
  • iMovie getting picture in picture and other new elements, making a must have for video journalists
  • other stuff I haven’t discovered yet.

let me know what you think of the new suite

I’ve found iWeb full of extraneous code that my webmaster mate says is a mess and doesn’t come up well on some PCs

After checking it out I’ll decide whether my Broadcast Journalism students ( University of Notre Dame Fremantle ) can save money by using the updated iMovie to edit news footage instead of the more challenging and fairly expensive Final Cut Pro.

The Transition from iMovie 07 to 08 was a little tricky for some users, but this rebirth looks extremely cool.

and as a long time Mac person – get well Steve Jobs!

Apple or Berry – here’s the magic we need for our touch screen phone

NewScientist has some great news for anyone who’ struggled with touch screens and big fingers – I hope Steve Jobs is all over them so I can get more accuracy from my stubby fingers on the iPhone

the story is here

the  video of the cool prototype is here

iPhone Matt & Stacey’s Wedding pic & post

For those who asked about the private wedding slideshow at the top of the blog…

Matt & Stacey got married and looked fabulous.

The Bridal party pic below was part of the slideshow of snaps with the iPhone as I shot video. This post is also via iPhone. My son calls me a Geek. dunno why!

If the couple agree I’ll post the video/slideshow :)

Murphy’s Law Muzzles Mighty Google Voice Search

The Google Voice Search mentioned here last week still hasn’t appeared in Apple’s iPhone Apps store ( A place I love :) )

Wired worked out why as you’ll see by clicking below
http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/11/apple-forgets-t.html

I do like the Apps store more than I should – and some of it is really useful, not just fun – I highly recommend iTalk and it’s computer companion iTalk Sync for recording quality audio on iPhone and wifi’ing it to your PC/Mac.

The other big App for me is FRING – Skype and many other comms on iPhone no matter who your carrier is.

Google & iPhone use speech recognition to increase accessability

I often check http://www.macdailynews.com/ and today found the following New York Times story

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/14/technology/internet/14voice.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Brings the welcome news of voice recognition on the iPhone through new Google technology.

Yahoo & Microsoft also provide voice recognition, and this story of Google’s big move suggests that the technology exists now to make devices more accessible to people with visual or other disabilities.

All we need is to let developers know their work is needed to create programmes for those missing out on the new abilities provided by technology to connect network and seek fellowship.

Great to see bionic limbs and a camera for the visually impaired featured in last week’s Time review of techno breakthroughs.

Please let me know any info or links you may find on devices that provide accessibility for the visually impaired or with other disabilities.

I hope to have the “Ethnic Ability” radio Blog up and running soon and it would be great to have contributors of links, info, articles, audio, video etc to share with people globally. ( see EDAC link in sidebar )

Sorry the Blog’s been blank for bit – assignmments to mark, practising new programmes, hosting and family have let you enjoy a break from my rants :)

And all the best to friends and family of Matt and Stacey who’ve enjoyed the iPhone slideshow ( password protected, sorry ) of the best wedding I’ve been to in decades.

Great story from Fairfax colleagues – Google Street View brings ‘em out of the woodwork ;*)

check this out for how new technology affects “ordinary” people

What do Muay Thai kickboxing, the Australian P.M. and Photojournalist Chris Gillham have in common? They all feature in my test posts of audio, video and still pics below :)

I was asked to check out blogging services by my friends at West Australia’s Ethnic Disability Advocacy Centre and found wordpress was the best in all objective reviews.

I have only been working the blog since monday, but I’m mightily impressed with it.  Look forward to a variety of posts and media, polls and some amazing opportunities to collaberate with others on very cool and much needed “people” stuff.

This Quicktime movie is a slideshow of some iPhone pics from ringside at a great Muay Thai Tournament I co-compered with Chris Korner for promoter Phon Martdee.

I just used iPhoto and the Ken Burns effect in slideshow, the music is guitar mixed with loops in Garage Band

The audio below is from my fill-in shift on Perth’s radio 882-6PR in drive-time with soon-to-be Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, the delightful newslady is Nicole Bailey.  ( I’m filling in late nights over summer, on from midnight perth time thursday/fri am 6pr.com.au for streaming )

Social networking & social justice

You don’t have to be a geek to be inspired by new science.

Recently Australia’s ABC screened “Kevin Bacon Cures Cancer” – an inspiring look at how the urban myth of 6 degrees of separation has evolved into the exciting new field of “Network” science.

The math and human aspects of the story/science are intriguing and promise much for the future, especially in curing diseases like cancer and protecting or enhancing other networks such as the web, power grids and there’s even an application for the US as it tries to penetrate or destroy terrorist organisations.

Don’t worry if you missed the telecast – here’s the link

http://www.abc.net.au/tv/documentaries/interactive/futuremakers/ep4/

Speaking of networks, I’m calling for collaberators on a series of projects to produce resources for community and other NGO groups such as  radio and TV Public Service announcements to reduce the stigma of mental illness and raise awareness for a range of humans whose voices are often ignored.

I’m also keen to publish audio & video on a range of medical and mental health conditions especially for people outside big urban areas who often miss out on support and self help programmes in the big city.

Perth people can access excellent help from the NGO connectgroups ( for whom I conduct free media and web workshops ) and they need help developing resources for people outside the urban hub.
visit connectgroups at;
http://www.connectgroups.org.au/

I’m also working with Zel ISCEL and the team at the Ethnic Disability Advocacy Centre  ( EDAC ) on some valuable education programmes and her excellent radio programme ” Ethnic Ability. ”

visit http://www.edac.org.au/ and click on the “radio” button for archived programmes.

Finally for now – anyone who works with recording speech may be delighted with a a free programme called “Levelator” which really makes a huge difference to the quality of recorded interviews and monologues.

visit   http://www.conversationsnetwork.org/levelator

and for iPhone geeks like me – you can now record broadcast quality aiff files and transfer to your Mac or PC with the iPhone app and syncing app available free at
