Australian admits creating first iPhone virus

Monday, November 9, 2009

By Brigid Andersen

A 21-year-old Australian man has admitted creating what is thought to be the first virus to infect Apple iPhones.

The virus, which can spread from phone to phone, changes the iPhone’s wallpaper to a photograph of 1980s singer Rick Astley – best known for his hit Never Gonna Give You Up.

Nathan Verity - family man from Perth - vale mate :(

Nathan leaves a wife and 5 year old child here in Perth.

His father and wife now face the heartbreak of formal identification and repatriation of their loved son and husband.

There are indications that the outrage has been perpetrated by a splinter group of Jemaa Islamiyeh.

Intelligence indicates those responsible may well be formerly jailed terrorists ( these are NOT freedom fighters ) who had been released after “rehabilitation” programmes.

I am against the death penalty even in this case, but these mongrel dogs must be locked up for the term of their natural life and made to do useful labor. The “religious” leaders who inspire and incite them deserve the same.

Nearly 9 in 10 Aussies stressed out: Lifeline ABC News Article link.

It’s time we spoke up about mental health as  a PRIORITY.

The old idea that depression affects 1 in 5 is CLEARLY under-estimating the epidemic of mental illness.

We in the media are banned from covering  suicides despite the toll being greater than road trauma, and air-time being given to dangerous quacks like “DR Death” Nietschke.

Nearly 9 in 10 Aussies stressed out: Lifeline

Monday, July 13, 2009

Almost nine in 10 Australians are stressed and many say work is to blame, according to a national poll commissioned by Lifeline Australia.

The annual survey released today reveals 41 per cent of Australians are experiencing unhealthy levels of stress, and a whopping 87 per cent of the nation is experiencing some degree of stress.

Thursday, July 9, 2009

Britain’s Guardian newspaper says it has uncovered a trail of so-called phone hacks done by or on behalf of Rupert Murdoch‘s tabloid The News of the World, involving the phones of up to 3,000 people.

Former deputy prime minister John Prescott was one of those whose phones were reportedly hacked, and he is furious.

Domain bids start internet porn row

Andrew Colley | July 07, 2009 |from The Australian

A BIDDING war for the rights to operate adult-theme generic top-level domains (GTLDs) is expected to stir debate over internet red light districts.

The world’s peak internet regulator rejected a US internet name registry‘s proposal to establish one such district under the top-level domain .xxx in May 2006 after it attracted protests by both porn industry groups and Christian lobbyists.

But Australia‘s top-level-domain registry operator AusRegistry has confirmed it has been approached by several parties seeking support for bids to register several adult-themed GTLDs, including .xxx, when the peak names regulator starts accepting them next February.

Journalism Rules Are Bent in News Coverage From Iran

By BRIAN STELTER NYTimes

Published: 29 June 2009

“Check the source” may be the first rule of journalism.

But in the coverage of the protests in Iran this month, some news organizations have adopted a different stance: publish first, ask questions later.

If you still don’t know the answer, ask your readers.

News organizations that would reject using cellphone videos or Twitter reports are forced to rely on them as an information source….

I’m interested in hearing from twitter people who’ve seen, posted, RTd material for and from Iran – what’s been effective, what’s been dangerous.

You may also wish to comment on plans to sanction nokia-siemens over supplying specialised web monitoring software to Iranian authorities.

I’m not sure about that one.

If it’s OK for western Governments to monitor and filter, why not Iran’s “elected” officials.

Tehran orders probe of ‘suspicious’ Neda death

Monday, June 29, 2009

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called for a judicial probe into the “suspicious” death of a young Iranian woman who has become an icon of opposition protests against his re-election.

Mr Ahmadinejad sent a letter to judiciary chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi-Shahroudi requesting a serious investigation to help identify “the elements” behind this month’s killing of Neda Agha-Soltan.

The president accused foreign media of using the case for propaganda purposes.

He also suggested that the opposition and Iran‘s enemies abroad aimed to misuse it “for their own political aims and also to distort the pure and clean image of the Islamic Republic in the world”.

Racism … youths bash a man in a train during the Cronulla riots / Craig Greenhill

AUSTRALIANS are in two minds about multiculturalism, a long-term survey has found.

They believe cultural diversity is good for the country but they’re worried that cultural differences will stop everyone from getting along.

An 11-year study by a collaboration of Australian universities has found 85 per cent of Australians acknowledge racial prejudice occurs in the nation and one in five has been a victim of racist verbal abuse.

The study found that 6.5 per cent of the 16,000 Australians surveyed were against multiculturalism.

iPhone App Glamorizes suicideApp store rates it in TOP 50!

I love my iPhone, can’t wait for 3.o – but Apple Puleeeze will you take a look at the name of this App.

As a mental health advocate and survivor of PTSD I can share with you that troubled young ladies don’t really need to have suicide presented as a glamorous, sexy thing.

I’ll leave the objectification of women for others to object too, and I agree, but for the love of someone’s daughter will you get this horrendously named App out of the App store until the name is changed.

Meanwhile I urge and even plead for everyone to demand more Government funding for real, grassroots, consumer driven suicide prevention work, especially suicide hotlines which here in Perth are so overwhelmed that desperate people are unable to get through. Please donate and support these Lifeline type services, they are likely to be needed by someone you know.

GOOGLE Gremlins – BBC “search temporarily affected by false warnings”

Google - so many searches, so very few gremlins

Google - so many searches, so very few gremlins

The BBC reported this around 1700 GMT/UTC Saturday January 31st – it will be interesting to see what caused the problem.

If your service was affected or you can help with info please leave a comment

Fault hits Google search service

Google screen grab

Users were warned that all search results were dangerous

Google’s search service has been hit by technical problems, with users unable to access search results.

For a period on Saturday, all search results were flagged as potentially harmful, with users warned that the site “may harm your computer”.

Users who clicked on their preferred search result were advised to pick another one.

Google says it is unclear what caused the problem, which is now resolved, but that it will make a statement later.

“There was a fault. We don’t know the nature of it yet. Everything has been solved. We are still making initial enquiries, ” a Google spokesperson told BBC News.

Murphy’s Law Muzzles Mighty Google Voice Search

The Google Voice Search mentioned here last week still hasn’t appeared in Apple’s iPhone Apps store ( A place I love :) )

Wired worked out why as you’ll see by clicking below
http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/11/apple-forgets-t.html

I do like the Apps store more than I should – and some of it is really useful, not just fun – I highly recommend iTalk and it’s computer companion iTalk Sync for recording quality audio on iPhone and wifi’ing it to your PC/Mac.

The other big App for me is FRING – Skype and many other comms on iPhone no matter who your carrier is.

Google & iPhone use speech recognition to increase accessability

I often check http://www.macdailynews.com/ and today found the following New York Times story

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/14/technology/internet/14voice.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Brings the welcome news of voice recognition on the iPhone through new Google technology.

Yahoo & Microsoft also provide voice recognition, and this story of Google’s big move suggests that the technology exists now to make devices more accessible to people with visual or other disabilities.

All we need is to let developers know their work is needed to create programmes for those missing out on the new abilities provided by technology to connect network and seek fellowship.

Great to see bionic limbs and a camera for the visually impaired featured in last week’s Time review of techno breakthroughs.

Please let me know any info or links you may find on devices that provide accessibility for the visually impaired or with other disabilities.

I hope to have the “Ethnic Ability” radio Blog up and running soon and it would be great to have contributors of links, info, articles, audio, video etc to share with people globally. ( see EDAC link in sidebar )

Sorry the Blog’s been blank for bit – assignmments to mark, practising new programmes, hosting and family have let you enjoy a break from my rants :)

And all the best to friends and family of Matt and Stacey who’ve enjoyed the iPhone slideshow ( password protected, sorry ) of the best wedding I’ve been to in decades.

What do Muay Thai kickboxing, the Australian P.M. and Photojournalist Chris Gillham have in common? They all feature in my test posts of audio, video and still pics below :)

I have only been working the blog since monday, but I’m mightily impressed with it.  Look forward to a variety of posts and media, polls and some amazing opportunities to collaberate with others on very cool and much needed “people” stuff.
