December Update

Header

Hi Tony

It’s been some time since our last update, organising and running of the BDR to the Red Centre certainly required a huge effort and it’s taken quite a while to get back to "normal" duties.

What an amazing experience it was for the riders from all around Australia who participated on our journey to the magnificently remote Glen Helen Resort located 132km West of Alice Springs.

Our mission was to raise awareness of depression, break down the stigma which still surrounds mental illness and raise funds for the Black Dog Institute.

I am pleased and proud to report that we succeeded on all counts having made beneficial contact with the communities we passed through, we captured significant traditional and social media during and after the Ride and raised nearly $80,000 for the Black Dog Institute .

The other feature of the Ride was the amazing camaraderie which developed amongst the riders and their willingness to talk openly with virtual strangers about the often taboo subjects of depression and suicide.

I would like to share with you some of the rider’s personal accounts of their Black Dog Ride.

Riders tell their BDR stories.

BDR for Lamp 2011

Header

Building on the success of this year’s inaugural Ride for Lamp we would like to announce that next year’s Ride will take take place on Sunday 17 April and will again run from Bridgetown to Busselton. Many riders are likely to head to beautiful Bridgetown on the Saturday so we have made arrangements with Nelsons Motel to have exclusive use of their wonderful property for the night. They are offering discounts on accommodation, fabulous gourmet buffet, cheap drinks and entertainment. It should be a great night in preparation for an awesome ride the next day. We are in the process of updating the website so check back soon for more details and online registration.

NEWSFLASH! I am hoping to confirm a very special guest rider in the next week or so. Check the website or Twitter for updates.

Ride to the Red Centre 2011

Header

Whilst my passion and drive to continue my mission have not waivered, I must be honest to myself and admit that running 2 national rides in the past 18 months has taken its toll on my family, my finances and my own well being. I had every intention of riding to the Red Centre again in 2011 and following recent talks with the Black Dog Institute we had decided to move the Capital Cities group rides start date away from Fathers Day to Saturday 20 August with the riders all converging on Alice Springs on Friday 26. If the Ride goes ahead it will be on those dates but I have to tackle a few hurdles over the holiday period and will make an announcement regarding the future of the Ride early in the New Year.

The Festive Season

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a safe and joyous Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

Cheers…..Steve
