Western Australia – Fwd: Buswell’s Homeswest policies heartless, populist and cruel to mentally ill and the disabled

Buswell’s Homeswest policies heartless, populist and cruel to mentally ill and the disabled

1 August 2011

Greens MLC Alison Xamon has accused the Minister for Housing, Troy Buswell, of putting popularity before humanity as his Homeswest’s Disruptive Behaviour Management Strategy continues to directly cause homelessness for mentally ill people and people with an acquired brain injury.

“This is Homeless Awareness Week, so I would hope that the Minister takes this opportunity to reflect on what impact his ill thought out policies are having on mentally ill and disabled people and their families,” Ms Xamon, Greens WA Spokesperson on Mental Health and Disabilities said today.

“A case in point is that of one of my constituents, a schizophrenic man, who was living in a Homeswest property and sadly found his mental health deteriorating to the point where it disrupted the neighbours. The neighbours, of course, have the right to live in a safe and peaceful environment. However, at this point, medical intervention was needed. But instead of ensuring that happened, Homeswest evicted my constituent who, after spending time in Graylands is now languishing in prison and ironically unable to apply for bail because he has been made homeless.

“What humane person would consider this a good outcome? These Homeswest policies are cruel and lacking compassion.

“Having said that, since there has been media coverage of this issue, I have had a number of heart-warming calls from people offering their support and best wishes, one even offering to have my constituent live with him. If the members of the community can step up with such profound compassion then surely the Minister can show some moral courage and do likewise.

“Everyone in WA should know what impact Buswell’s policies are having on some of our State’s most vulnerable people. We need intelligent and forward-thinking solutions to this complex problem, so I’m throwing down the gauntlet to Mr Buswell. Are you capable of genuine long term humane solutions for our most vulnerable citizens? Or are you more interested in your cheap talking tough?” Ms Xamon concluded.

  1. Please help SOMEONE!!!
My mother & mentally I’ll brother live in a Homeswest home. Mum has lived in this house over 15 years spending over $20,000 on home renovations, she applied to purchase this house & was accepted but they never got round to following it through.
My mum passed away 6 weeks ago. I was planning on moving in with my brother as I am his carer & Homeswest have put him onto the streets. When I kicked up they offered him a unit in minutes. He doesn’t need a unit he has a
It makes no sense to occupy 2 properties when all we need is one. They are stopping another homeless person from having a house.
Homeswest have also now lied to me saying my brother discussed this situation with them at the beginning of the year, stating my brother spoke to them at the beginning of the year regarding my mums TERMINAL illness. WHAT ??? My mum didn’t have a terminal illness. She accidentally overdosed on her prescribed medication. The asked the lady to repeat the lie numerous times which she did stating he spoke to her personally. LIARS!!!
