Greens support The Great Australian Internet Blackout against net censorship
Greens Senator Scott Ludlam is supporting over 500 websites that will mark this Australia Day by fading to black in protest against the Federal Government’s proposed internet filter.
“I am proud to be part of this week-long national action – The Great Australian Internet Blackout,” said Australian Greens spokesperson for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy Senator Scott Ludlam.
“The government’s plan will not protect children, will do nothing to crack down on criminal activity online, and sets a dangerous precedent of centralised net censorship,” Senator Ludlam said.
“Communications Minister Stephen Conroy should start paying attention to the almost universal condemnation of this scheme and pursue alternatives rather than pushing ahead with the mandatory filter.”
To take part visit the campaign’s website internetblackout.com.au which features instructions to turn websites black for the duration of the protest, but the dark covering won’t prevent people from seeing participating websites: it can be removed with just one click.

Greens welcome City of Perth vision – and urge State Govt to act
MEDIA RELEASE – Thursday 21 January 2010
The Greens have congratulated the City of Perth for its far-sighted vision for the city, with its emphasis on light rail, pedestrians and public open space – but they warn that the State Government has so far failed to match actions with rhetoric on light rail.
“I was pleased to hear the WA Planning Minister today say he supported light rail in principle – but I was also extremely puzzled, given so far this Government has been siphoning money away from the expansion of public transport and into roads,” WA Greens Transport Spokesperson, Alison Xamon MLC, said.
“Everyone knows – and studies have proven – that if you build more roads, more cars use them, meaning more congestion and more pollution.
“At the same time, if you improve public transport and pedestrian and bicycle networks, more people will use them too – meaning we reduce traffic and greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to significantly healthier lifestyles.
“You also help protect households from the inevitable squeeze when fuel prices go up.
“Let’s see the Government now match these words with some positive steps for public transport,” Ms Xamon continued. “So far, since coming to power, this Government has:
· Made no commitment to extend the rail network beyond Brighton;
· Reneged on the election promise to develop a rail-spur to Ellenbrook;
· Made many cut backs to bus services to the eastern side of the network, including the airport; and
· Funnelled funds from public transport into roads.”
Australian Greens Senator for WA Scott Ludlam, the Party’s Local Government & Sustainable Cities Spokesperson, said in some ways Perth led the nation with rail links and cycle paths, but much more needed to be done to make the city liveable as it continued growing.
“We have got many black spots in terms of public transport in our middle and outer suburbs and it’s those residents who are especially vulnerable to inevitable oil price rises,” Senator Ludlam said.
“Local governments have often set the benchmark for excellent planning when it comes to liveable communities in WA – but we don’t always see the support they need coming from State Government.
“It’s time for the current State Government to get out of its dinosaur road-building mentality and take action to ensure this is a liveable city in the future.”

Time for Rudd to step in and ensure justice for Maralinga nuclear vets: Greens
The Australian Greens are dismayed by the Rudd Government’s refusal to help Australian veterans of the Maralinga atomic bomb tests of the 1950s and 60s.
"I find it appalling that this government is continuing the shame of past Australian government’s who have ignored these veterans for so long," said Australian Greens Spokesman Scott Ludlam.
"It’s time the Prime Minister stepped in to ensure justice for these Australian military personnel, who’ve been left to their own devices to join a class action against the British Ministry of Defence.
"Veterans’ Affairs Minister Alan Griffin has said the compensation status of these nuclear vets is under review, but vets are still waiting.
"The Australian Greens submitted a detailed question on notice to the minister in early December regarding recognition and entitlements for these veterans and have had no response.
"We particularly want to know if the Rudd government accepts the findings of the British High Court that the UK government has a case to answer for the suffering injury, disability or death in consequence of exposure to ionising radiation during the nuclear tests carried out by the British Government in Australia from 1952 to 1967.
"We know the Australian government was complicit in these tests which saw many soldiers used as human guinea pigs to test deadly chemicals, including mustard gas.
"It’s time this government put an end to this sorry saga in Australian history and help these vets receive the justice they truly deserve," Senator Ludlam concluded.
